The City of Rocks National Reserve is one of southern Idaho’s best backcountry adventures. The 14,407-acre reserve is situated at the south end of the Albion Mountains, and features towering granite pinnacles, fins, and domes. Climbers come from around the world to conquer routes ranging in difficulty from 5.0 (least difficult) to 5.13 (most difficult). The Reserve is also known for its hiking, mountain biking and bird watching opportunities.

Emigrants of the California Trail describe the rocks here in vivid detail as “a city of tall spires,” “steeple rocks,” and “the silent city.” Today, this backcountry byway attracts rock climbers, campers, hikers, hunters, and those with the spirit of adventure. There’s inspirational scenery, exceptional opportunities for geologic study, and remnants of the Old West awaiting your discovery.

Things to Know

Hiking during the winter and early spring may be difficult if trails are saturated with rain or snow.
During the summer, remember to take plenty of water to keep hydrated.
All roads are gravel. Some roads may be impassable from November through April.
There is no fee to enter the Reserve.
