There’s a moment each year, usually sometime in late September, when Idaho shifts. The mornings sharpen, the aspens start to glow, and entire mountainsides begin their slow transition into gold. Fall foliage in Idaho isn’t a backdrop; it’s an unfolding experience. We decided to chase it, carving out a loop from Boise to McCall, Garden Valley, and finally into Ketchum and Sun Valley, timing our trip perfectly with peak color across the state.
By the end of the journey, we felt completely recharged, settling into that unmistakable feeling that only autumn brings- the anticipation of the holidays, slower mornings, and a desire to savor every breath of crisp mountain air before winter arrives. If you’re looking for an unforgettable fall getaway, this Idaho road trip offers the perfect way to experience the season at its very best.
Fall Colors in McCall
Our first stop was McCall, just two hours north of Boise, where fall arrives early and dramatically. The town sits along the shores of Payette Lake, but the true magic happens inside Ponderosa State Park, which typically closes for camping around mid-October. We managed to slip in just before the campground closed for the season, giving us a front-row seat to some of the best fall foliage in the state.
Each morning, we laced up our boots and wandered into the crisp mountain air. The trails were hushed, blanketed in gold and orange, and scented with pine and damp earth. On one of those quiet walks, after years of hoping, we finally spotted a fox. It walked silently across the trail right before us, its red coat glowing against the autumn forest before disappearing into the trees just as quickly as it appeared. It was one of those fleeting wildlife encounters that makes you stop and appreciate how incredible nature is when you’re spending time fully immersed and waiting to see what it will offer next.
After hiking, we settled into one of my favorite road trip traditions: finding great local coffee. Provisions quickly became our go-to breakfast stop, pairing hearty morning plates with excellent coffee and a welcoming atmosphere. After a morning of hiking in crisp, chilly breezes, a warm omelet and toast was the perfect breakfast. Alpine Pantry was another favorite, especially for pastries and a cozy start to the day. But the standout for us was North Fork Coffee Roasters, whose seasonal fall drinks had us coming back morning after morning. If you’re visiting during autumn, don’t skip their seasonal menu. I had an apple cider latte and let me just say, I ended up having multiple on this trip.
One of the most memorable experiences in McCall came from a simple drive. We followed the road north toward Upper Payette Lake, winding through forests that seemed to become more colorful with every mile. Around each bend, the aspens grew brighter, the maples deeper shades of orange and crimson, until the trees opened to reveal Upper Payette Lake itself.
The lake was perfectly still, reflecting the surrounding mountains like glass. Every yellow, orange and red tree along the shoreline doubled in the water below, creating one of the most breathtaking fall scenes we experienced anywhere on the trip. It’s an easy drive from town, but one that absolutely deserves a place on any Idaho fall itinerary.
After a few peaceful days filled with hiking, wildlife, scenic drives and more coffee than we’d like to admit, we packed up for our next destination.

Fall Colors in Garden Valley
Just an hour and a half from McCall, the scenery begins to change. Dense forests gradually give way to river canyons, rolling hills and wide-open skies, making the drive to Garden Valley feel like entering a completely different side of Idaho.
Our reason for visiting was simple: we had booked a stay at The Stargazer Cabin and Dome, easily one of the most unique accommodations we’ve ever experienced.
From the outside, it’s a beautifully designed modern cabin tucked into the hills. But attached to the home is a transparent dome where you’ll actually sleep beneath the stars. At night, the Milky Way stretched overhead while we lay in bed watching constellations drift across the sky. There are few places where you can fall asleep feeling so connected to the outdoors while still enjoying every modern comfort.
Morning brought an entirely different kind of beauty. As the sun rose, warm light filtered through the dome while the surrounding hills glowed in shades of red, orange and gold. It felt as though we were waking up inside the middle of Idaho’s autumn landscape. One unexpected highlight… the bathroom.
A deep, sunken soaking tub sits beside an oversized picture window overlooking colorful trees, offering complete privacy and some of the most peaceful views imaginable. After long days exploring, it became one of my favorite places to unwind. Sometimes the best travel moments aren’t packed itineraries, they’re simply sitting still long enough to appreciate where you are.
After a couple evenings of home-cooked meals, board games, stargazing beneath an impossibly clear sky, and simply slowing down, we found ourselves completely recharged. Garden Valley has a way of encouraging you to put the itinerary aside for a while and appreciate the simple moments. It was the perfect reset before hitting the road for the final leg of our journey.

Fall Colors in Ketchum & Sun Valley
Our final drive carried us east toward Ketchum and Sun Valley, where the fall colors somehow became even more spectacular. The valley seemed to glow from every direction, with golden aspens climbing the mountainsides and vibrant trees lining rivers, trails and quiet neighborhoods. One of our favorite mornings began on the Wood River Trail with our pup. As we wandered beside the river, leaves drifted across the path while birds chirped overhead and the water flowed quietly beside us. It’s an easy walk, but during peak fall color it becomes one of the most beautiful places to experience the season
Naturally, breakfast followed. We stopped at Bigwood Bread Bakery & Café, where warm breakfast sandwiches and perfectly crafted lattes hit the spot after a cool morning outdoors. We loved it so much we couldn’t resist buying a loaf of fresh sourdough for the drive.
The true highlight of our time in the valley, however, was Silver Creek Preserve.
We spent hours wandering through golden grasses and vibrant cottonwoods, taking in one breathtaking scene after another. We’d heard the preserve was known for incredible birdlife, so we walked quietly, hoping to spot a few of its more elusive residents.
Instead, we found moose. One appeared. Then another. Before long, we’d counted at least five wandering through the preserve, calmly feeding among the colorful trees. Watching such massive animals move so gracefully through the autumn landscape felt almost surreal.
To finish our visit, we met up with a guide from Silver Creek Outfitters for an afternoon of fly fishing on the preserve’s famous waters. Silver Creek is legendary among anglers, and for good reason. Crystal-clear water reflects the surrounding fall colors while the quiet rhythm of casting encourages you to slow down and fully appreciate the landscape around you.
Hiring a guide elevated the experience in ways we hadn’t expected. Beyond helping us refine our casting, we learned about the preserve’s rich history, its unique spring-fed ecosystem, and the renowned trout that have made these waters famous. It added a deeper appreciation for a place we already found incredibly beautiful.

As we made the drive back toward Boise, windows cracked just enough to let in the cool mountain air, it was hard not to reflect on how much variety we’d experienced over the course of a single week. Each destination offered something completely different, yet together they created one unforgettable autumn road trip.
McCall delivered quiet forest trails, reflective alpine lakes and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Garden Valley offered peaceful evenings beneath the stars and one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed. Ketchum and Sun Valley rounded out the journey with vibrant mountain landscapes, memorable wildlife sightings and some of the most beautiful fly fishing scenery we’ve ever experienced.
If you’re planning your own Idaho fall getaway, this route strikes the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. Time your trip for late September through mid-October, pack plenty of layers for chilly mornings, and leave room in your itinerary for the unexpected. Some of our favorite memories, such as the fox crossing the trail, five moose wandering through the preserve, or finding a favorite neighborhood coffee shop, weren’t planned at all. That’s the beauty of autumn in Idaho. The changing leaves may inspire the road trip, but it’s the quiet moments in between that stay with you long after the season has passed.
