Dig in! Located next to the Old Idaho Penitentiary Museum, the Museum of Mining and Geology explores Idaho’s complex and fascinating geological heritage. Idaho’s nickname of the “Gem State” originates from its early history of intensive mining, particularly gold and silver that made the state world famous long before it was known for potatoes. Idaho is one of the few places in the world where star garnets can be found and this museum interprets this history and earth science in a way that’s fun and entertaining for the whole family.
