Fort Henry Historic Byway

Taking its name from the first European settlement in Idaho, Fort Henry Historic Byway displays the rugged and rural beauty of eastern Idaho. Hike or ATV the acres of white quartz sand blown into 400-foot-high dunes at St. Anthony Sand Dunes, try your hand at the renowned fishing opportunities along Henry’s Fork of the Snake River or spend time learning more about the Indigenous history in this area.

Road Trip Tips

Turn-by-Turn Directions: Begins at North Rexburg U.S. 20 exit, onto Salem Highway, to St. Anthony Sand Dunes on Red Road and on to A-2 Road Junction. Continue on A-2 north, then east to Island Park at U.S. 20. From the intersection of Salem Highway and 500 North, go east to St. Anthony on U.S. 20 Business Route, turn at the Fun Farm Sportsman Access and follow old U.S. 191 past Chester to Ashton.

Road Conditions: This byway is a two-lane road with no mountain passes. During the winter, A-2 is not plowed and becomes a snowmobiling trail.
